INTERVIEW: BRANDON SVARC NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM FOUNDER

“DENIMSQUAD INTERVIEW” is an interview with an expert denim heads or with founder/CEO of denim brand.

Today we got the opportunities to interview Mr. Brandon Svarc the founder of NAKED AND FAMOUS DENIM. NAKED AND FAMOUS DENIM is a worldwide famous raw denim brand from Canada.

D: Why did you fall in love with Denim (especially Raw Denim)?

B: I love denim because it’s like a blank canvas that I can use as an outlet for my creativity. There are so many different types of denim we can develop and create for our customers to collect. I love obsessive denim fans and love collecting things myself.

D: When did you start in love with Denim?

B: Denim is in my blood. My family has been in the jeans and workwear industry for over 70 years here in Canada. In fact, when I was born my father made a brand of jeans named after me! So I guess you could say I’ve been in love with denim since birth haha.

D: How did you start NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM?

B: I worked for 2 years in a mass-market fashion company in Canada as a marketing manager. The owner was a tough guy and great businessman, and there I learned how to be tough and negotiate in business. I left there to create a Public Relations consulting firm specializing in fashion and gained several good clients. I kept getting great press for these brands I represented and I got jealous! So I decided to start a brand of my own that was very directional and press-worthy… Naked & Famous Denim was born.

D: What does NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM mean to you?

B: The name Naked & Famous Denim, along with our pop-art logo is satire. It’s meant to make fun of all the silly Hollywood brands that sell overpriced crappy jeans. Instead of selling “glamour” and celebrity associations we just sell better jeans at a better price.

D: Can you describe how to starting and running a denim brand?

B: Some people think it’s easy to start a denim brand, especially if you want to keep it raw and simple. But to last for over 8 years as we have done so far, and be profitable is a great challenge. We have passion and experience, and work our butts off every day to be better than the season before.

D: What make you survive to build your own brand?

B: We have great passion and we have a great brand and business concept. We don’t only try to compete based on “design” or artistic value. We are innovative and product-value focused.

D: Who is the target market for NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM?

B: Anyone who wants a great pair of jeans, and doesn’t want to be ripped off.

D: Can you describe your creative process for NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM?

B: We don’t “design” in the way that most brands “design” their products. We aren’t interested in runway shows or dreaming up new inspiration each season. Simply put, each season we build and develop new fabrics that we think are fun.

D: Where does NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM inspiration come from?

B: We try to tap into our childhood imaginations. As a kid your imagination runs wild and is the greatest it will ever be. For example: When I was young, I had glow-in-the-dark stickers all over my ceiling, so we made glow-in-the-dark jeans!

D: Who is the most influence person/country for NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM?

B: My grandfather Paul. He started selling jeans and workwear 70 years ago and without him I wouldn’t be where I am today.

D: Can you describe NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM range?

B: I would say that we have 3 different types of jeans. We have the core basics, which are great value basics. We have fun fashion jeans like red denim, or cashmere blend, or colored weft denim. And we have the more innovative crazy stuff too like 32oz heaviest denim, glow-in-the-dark jeans, reflective denim, red core denim (blue jeans that fade to red) and more. We also have amazing shirts, knits, jackets and accessories.

D: NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM has the heaviest denim in the world which is32 oz monster jeans, can you tell to us, what inspired you to make that article?

B: I love superlatives, and the 32oz is most definitely the heavyweight denim superlative. I made these jeans for the same reason people climb Mount Everest. The tallest mountain… the heaviest denim.

D: Please give us a tips how to maintain and make an incredible fade from NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM?

B: There are no rules with how or when to wash your jeans. The fun of raw denim is that you get to make your own rules and do whatever you want with your jeans. How to maintain your jeans is a personal choice. If you want to get incredible fades, I would recommend you wear your jeans hard and wear ‘em often!

D: What do you want to say to all denim heads around the world?

B: Hooray for raw denim!
